today my old companion came
and took from me my peaceful dreams
then whispered in my ear
"I've come to spend the day with you"

sending fingers running up and down
my arms and back and legs
reminding me of each and every place
that i had ever had to heal

and every time i bent a joint
pushed a key, took a step
my companion whispered intimately
"I'm here with you today"

no pill nor potion, lotion or cream
not even a lovers warm embrace
can dissuade this touch
or persuade my companion to leave

only time will end this visit
perhaps tomorrow or another day
and still the voice that whispers hauntingly
"One day I'll be here to stay"
